Why origami?

I’ve always loved origami. I have genuine envy for people who do it really well – the patience, the precision, the ability to see a flat sheet of paper and know exactly where each fold needs to go.

There’s something meditative about origami. It requires complete focus. You have to think about where you’re folding and how you’re folding before you make the crease. Once you commit to the fold, precision matters. A millimetre off early on compounds into something noticeably wrong by the end.

But here’s what I really appreciate: even if you get a fold slightly wrong, you can often correct it. The final crane might not be perfect, but it will still fly. It will still be recognisable. It will still work.

That’s how I think about marketing for small businesses.

Origami is the Japanese art of paper folding, combining ori (to fold) and kami (paper), traditionally used in ceremonies and as symbols of good fortune. The paper crane, or tsuru, represents longevity and healing in Japanese culture. Creating one requires patience, precision, and a single sheet of paper transformed through deliberate, sequential folds.

You start with something ordinary. You make careful, strategic decisions about where to fold. You build sequentially – each fold depends on the one before it. You stay focused. And gradually, something flat becomes something that can soar.

Sound familiar?

That’s exactly how good marketing should work for small businesses:

  • Start where you are (a single sheet, your current reality)
  • Think before you act (consider where and how to fold)
  • Build sequentially (each piece builds on what came before)
  • Precision matters (but perfection isn’t required)
  • Mistakes can be corrected (adjust and keep going)
  • Transform methodically (patient, deliberate progress)
  • Create something remarkable from simple materials

And there’s whimsy in it too. Origami figures have personality and charm. Marketing shouldn’t be all serious business – there’s room for creativity, playfulness, and bringing ideas to life.

So when you see the paper bird in my logo, know that it represents everything I believe about helping small businesses with their marketing: thoughtful planning, building blocks, patience, precision where it matters, and the transformation of something simple into something that flies.
